Project Overview

The Vision

While honoring the quintessential New England aesthetic of the home, the primary objective of this project was to expand the functional footprint and create a seamless indoor-to-outdoor transition. This design focuses on turning a restricted footprint into a sophisticated multi-level retreat that feels significantly larger than its physical boundaries. Our solutions epitomize designing with purpose: we leveraged the natural grade to carve out distinct garden rooms, engineered seamless connections from the full-expanse deck, and established a clear hierarchy of space—moving from expansive, multi-use entertaining zones to cozy, deliberate alcoves built for connection.

The Challenge

Expanding the functional footprint of a restricted lot while maintaining New England aesthetic integrity and creating seamless interior-to-exterior flow.

Key Features & Innovations

01

Effortless Interior-to-Exterior Flow

We utilized the home's existing deck as the primary gateway, engineering a transition that pulls the comfort of the indoors out into the landscape. This creates a natural architectural movement that guides you from the upper living levels directly into the heart of the social space.

02

Programmed Garden Rooms

To maximize the utility of the lot, we carved out distinct 'garden rooms.' Each zone is intentionally programmed for a specific use—be it cooking, dining, or lounging—ensuring the smaller footprint never feels cluttered or cramped.

03

The Main Terrace

As the estate's central engine, the main terrace combines a high-performance kitchen with ample overflow space. Featuring the timeless pairing of New England Fieldstone and Bluestone, this area anchors the design in the local vernacular while providing a timeless, resort-caliber social hub.

04

The Social Hearth

Tucked away on a private lower level, this intimate gas firepit terrace provides a cozy sanctuary for year-round use, serving as a dedicated destination for evening connection sheltered by the natural grade.

05

Topography & Natural Flow

We leaned into the property's slope, following the natural grade through the strategic use of integrated bench walls and wide stone steps. These elements provide structural stability and essential overflow seating without taking up valuable floor space.
